3rd Annual imc - usa convention 2005
Convention details Jaswant Kaur of the Sikh Human Rights Group was asked to speak on the lessons from the Nanavati Commission into the Delhi Pogroms at The third annual convention of the Indian Muslim Council - USA, an advocacy group dedicated to protecting the rights of minorities and promoting pluralism, was a huge success. Jaswant Kaur - “There have been 8 previous commissions and committees look into the incidents of 1984, although each commission or committee has bought further evidence- none of these has provided a conviction. The finding of the ninth commission in 21 years into the massacre of Sikhs has been widely condemned as a white wash by the Indian and international media, human rights organisations, international institutions and maybe, more importantly, the families of victims. Many feel that the Nanavati commission does not go far enough, infact the commission does not even fulfil its own terms of reference.” The theme of the event was Activism for Better India and it was held in Detroit on 1st October, 2005. It was attended by hundreds of members of the Indian Diaspora as well as the representatives from the broad-based Coalition to Build a Better India (CBBI). The speakers included representatives of major world religions as well as experts on International Human Rights Law and leaders of Human Rights organizations. ----------------------------------------- |
